Overview[]
The Act sets forth the rights of access by Canadian citizens and corporations to government information that is non-personal. Such information can be requested irrespective of the form in which it is held, including letters, memos, reports, photographs, films, microfilms and electronic data.
The Act also provides certain exemptions from disclosure for information that is likely to cause harm if it is released, including matters relating to national security, law enforcement and trade secrecy. Information already published, for example in libraries and museums, is excluded from the Act.
