An acoustic coupler (also referred to as an acoustical coupler) is

a device for entering data signal into a network from a conventional telephone using audible sounds to effect the connection.[1]
[a] device that converts electrical signals into audio signals, enabling data to be transmitted over the public telephone network via a conventional telephone handset; it also converts the audio signals back into electrical signals at the receiving end. A kind of modem.[2]
