Adaptive maintenance is

the modification of a software product, performed after delivery, to keep a software product usable in a changed or changing environment.[1]

Adaptive maintenance usually is required over the life of a system to modify the software so it continues to run as the external environment changes, e.g., hardware (display devices, computer, memories, communication protocols, etc.).
