Noun. An arrest is

[a]ny act, including taking, seizing or detaining of a person, that indicates an intention to take a person into custody and that subjects the person to the control of the person making the arrest.[1]
[the] act of detaining an individual by legal authority based on an alleged violation of the law.[2]

Verb. To arrest means to take a person into custody, by authority of law, for the purpose of charging him/her with a criminal offense.


"An arrest is indicated when an officer observes behavior that is contrary to criminal or administrative provisions of law, or reasonably believes the person has engaged in such behavior, or upon warrant issued by a competent legal authority. Arrests are generally made in order to guarantee a person's appearance at a criminal or administrative proceeding."[3]
