General[]

An author is

  • a person or entity responsible for the content of a book or other publication.

U.S. copyright law[]

While the term author is used repeated in U.S. copyright law, the term is never defined. The U.S. Supreme Court has defined an "author" as “[h]e to whom anything owes its origin; originator, maker.”[2]
