Definitions[]

A brain-computer interface is

[a] system which allows the user to interact with a virtual reality environment using brain waves.[1]
a direct communication pathway between the brain or nervous system of a human or animal (or cultures of neural cells or neural networks in cultures) and an external device, which is usually a computer.[2]

Overview[]

"BCIs can be used to help repair, assist or augment human cognitive or sensory–motor functions. Early experimental applications include a brain–controlled helicopter and legs. It should be noted that there is a growing concern over the potential vulnerability of such systems to hacking."[3]
