The CIU supports the FBI priorities of combating terrorism, espionage, and crimes of all types by ensuring the future viability of lawfully-authorized electronic surveillance.

The unit is responsible for the development of overarching CALEA implementation strategies; coordination of liaison with all governmental, law enforcement, and industry entities; consultation with law enforcement and industry regarding technical standards; deployment of technical electronic surveillance solutions; oversight of the telecommunications industry's development of capability enhancements; and the fulfillment of all legislative and regulatory CALEA requirements.
