Contamination is

[a] [t]ype of incident involving the the introduction of data of one security classification or security category into data of a lower security classification or different security category.[1]
[t]he intermixing of data at different sensitivity and need-to-know levels. The lower-level data is said to be contaminated by the higher level data; thus, the contaminating (higher level) data may not receive the required level of protection.[2]
