The Correspondence Management System (CMS) records the Copyright Office’s written transactions with remitters, and has largely replaced the earlier ETS system[1]. The system allows retrieval of records by correspondence control number, applicant's name, title of work, and any entered cross-references[2]. Authority to maintain such records is granted by 17 U.S.C. 705[3] and 908(b)[4]. See Notice of Current Systems of Records for more information regarding the Copyright Office's compliance with the Privacy Act of 1974.
The system was fully installed in 1981[5]. CMS was established as part of COINS (Copyright Office In-Process System)[6].
