Overview[]

The Act was signed by the President on April 10, 2003. The Act brought Irish law into line with the EU Data Protection Directive. Among the major changes were the extension of data protection rules to manual records; improvements in the right of access and new rules in relation to the fair obtaining and fair processing of data. The registration system was also the subject of change.
