Definition[]

A dial-up connection is a type of network connection where the user dials a telephone number and communicates with a computer via modem. Early on, a dial-up connection was the primary means to access the Internet. A dial-up connection offers data transmission speeds of up to 56 kilobits, or 1,000 bits per second (Kbps).

Security issues[]

A dial-up connection "can pose serious risks to computer systems because they can allow an intruder to circumvent access controls such as firewalls and intrusion detection software that protect a network from external threats."[1]
