Overview

There are currently 27 EU Member States. From an original membership of six states, there have been six successive enlargements, the largest occurring on May 1, 2004, when 10 new Member States joined. The EU is currently composed of twenty republics, six kingdoms and one grand duchy. Negotiations are currently under way with a number of other states.
