GIF (an acronym for Graphics Interchange Format) is a compressed image data format created by CompuServe to speed the downloading of images. Unisys Corp. claims a patent for the GIF technology.

GIF is

[o]ne of the two most common file formats for graphic images; the other is the jpg. Widely used on the Internet due to its high compression and subsequent small file size. GIF files have a .gif file extension and can be created or edited in most popular graphics applications.[1]
