Definitions[]

A Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) is/are

[a]greements between nations to exchange information in support of investigations of criminal behavior.[1]
[a]n understanding and agreement between two countries that wish to mutually cooperate regarding investigation, prosecution, and enforcement of the provisions of the laws of the agreeing countries. The MLAT also specifies the grounds on which a request by either nation may be rejected or denied by the other nation.[2]
[an agreement] which exist[s] between countries and allow[s] for information and other assistance from private and public sources to be shared across borders for the purposes of official investigations and prosecutions.[3]
