The National Committee for Information Technology Standards (NCITS) took a leading role in establishing IT standards for the United States and in representing U.S. interests in groups that set international standards.

The forum was renamed Accredited Standards Committee, NCITS, National Committee for Information Technology Standards in 1997, and the current name InterNational Committee for Information Technology Standards (INCITS) was approved in 2001.
