Optical storage (also referred to as optical data storage) is

[h]igh-density disc storage that uses a laser to "write" information on the surface. Erasable or rewritable optical storage enables written information to be erased and new information written.[1]

Overview[edit | edit source]

Data is recorded by making marks in a pattern that can be read back with the aid of light. A common technique used by computers involves a tiny beam of laser light precisely focused on a spinning disc. There are other means of optically storing data and new methods are in development. Optical storage differs from other data storage techniques that make use of technologies such as magnetism or semiconductors.
