Security function is

[t]he capability provided by a system element. The capability may be expressed generally as a concept or specified precisely in requirements. A security function must be implemented.[1]
[t]he hardware, software, and/or firmware of the information system responsible for enforcing the system security policy and supporting the isolation of code and data on which the protection is based.[2]
