Definition[edit | edit source]

The telephone network was originally designed in a star configuration with each customer connected by a dedicated line — a twisted pair of copper wires — to a central office facility. This design was considered an efficient and secure means to enable all customers connected to the telephone network to make voice calls to any other customer on the network.[1]
