Encryption Edit

An update is an

[an a]utomatic or manual cryptographic process that irreversibly modifies the state of a COMSEC key.[1]
[t]he act or process by which data items bound in an existing public key certificate, especially authorizations granted to the subject, are changed by issuing a new certificate.[2]

General Edit

To update means to bring current.

Risks (Software) Edit

"On the other hand, there is a nontrivial chance that updates will diminish existing and needed functionality, and people are sometimes reluctant to apply updates because they are reluctant to instigate system instability. Thus, the trustworthiness of the updates themselves, as well as the updating process, becomes an issue of concern."[3]
