Overview[]

Voice of America (VOA) is the oldest of the U.S. government radio broadcasting services. It originated as an integral part of the Office of War Information (OWI). In 1948, President Harry Truman issued Executive Order 9608, terminating the OWI and transferring its international information functions to the Department of State. VOA was also transferred to the State Department, which then became the official overseas broadcast arm of the United States.
